A big thanks to all volunteering their time to make our relatively young ANZAC Day Dawn service a success.
Our Progress association will again be sponsoring the breakfast afterwards. After another great Easter carnival progress have donated some of the proceeds to this most reverent of days......
The service will again be at the memorial in Martin Street in-front of St Martin Chapel at 6:00am, recent works have made the area much safer for all.
Blackwood Coffee Roasters will also be open from 6:00am-10:00am for Coffee and snacks.

Blackwood Qigong Classes — new 5-session block starts 25th August
Another 5-session block of Qigong Classes starts tomorrow — 25th August! Every Tuesday from 7:30am to 8:30am. 😃
Qigong (pronounced chee-gong) is a ‘moving meditation’ which involves acupressure, gentle stretching, and flowing movements.
Benefits may include:
- Stress reduction and pain relief
- Reduced tension and better sleep
- Mental clarity and emotional calm
- Increased energy levels
- Improved circulation and immunity
In these classes you don’t learn any routines — you simply follow along, bliss out and then float home! Suitable for all ages and levels of fitness. Beginners welcome!
$50 for 5 sessions or $15 casual. Please note — you can still attend even if you can’t make all the classes! You can pay as-you-go.

WINDFALL Documentary — Blackwood Community Launch
Blackwood is rolling out the red carpet for the community launch of WINDFALL, a new documentary about Central Victoria — the 2021 COVID lockdown, the ‘cool climate cyclone’ and the resilience of our community.

Where: St Martin’s Chapel, Blackwood
Cost: Free — all welcome
Glam up if you wish — everyone is welcome to strut the red carpet on the night.
Directed by Brendan Hehir and produced by Lizzette Atkins, with cinematography by Tibor Hegedis and editing by Travis Trewin. Funded by Emergency Recovery Victoria and community-driven fundraising.

Trail Running Series at Blackwood — Sunday 31st May (Notice to Residents)
Notice to Residents / Road Users
On Sunday 31st May there will be a trail running event being conducted in and around the Blackwood Recreation Reserve (Event HQ and start/finish line).
We please ask you to be particularly cautious and wary of runners in the area between 8.30am and 1.00pm on Sunday 31st May. Warning road signage will be in place.
No fixed road closures will be in place over the weekend, however the following roads will have significant foot traffic:
- Recreation Reserve Rd
- Simmons Reef Rd
- Lerderderg Rd
- Quicks Rd
- Skinners Rd
Please note that the town will be very busy on Sunday morning, with parked cars between approximately 7.30am and 12.30pm.
About the event
Rapid Ascent's Trail Running Series returns to Blackwood after a great first outing in 2025. The courses take in forest and bushland tracks, sections beside the Lerderderg River, the historic aqueduct trails and flowing singletrack through Lerderderg State Park.
Three courses on offer:
- Long Course — 22km
- Medium Course — 15.8km
- Short Course — 7.9km
We welcome you to come out and cheer on the competitors, or just enjoy the extra buzz around the village. Martin Street Coffee Roasters, the Blackwood Hotel, Blackwood General and St Erth Café will all be open and busy.

Australian Gold Panning Championships 2025 - Blackwood
The Championships are open for all ages and skill levels. Competitors are provided with a bucket containing a set number of gold flakes. The time taken to pan off and recover the gold flakes is recorded. The panners with the fastest adjusted time advance to the finals for each major category. Trophies are awarded to all category winners.
There is an additional panning bay seeded with small jewels for beginners to try their hand at panning.
And don't miss out on your entry into 'Stake your Claim' - each entrant will peg out a section of ground for the change to win one of two gold nuggets.

A reminder that Qigong Classes start tomorrow! 😍
Qigong - pronounced 'chee-gong' is a 'moving meditation' that involves gentle stretching, acupressure and relaxing flowing movements. It's designed to bring your mind-body and breath into harmony and leaves you feeling calm, relaxed and energised. 🙌🏻 Please meet tomorrow morning ready for a 7:30am start, outside TinyTown gym at the Blackwood Cricket Oval. (And we'll do it every Tuesday in February!) $15 casual or $40 for 4 classes. Some details if you're planning to come:
- Please bring a water bottle
- Wear comfortable clothing that is easy to move in
We will finish the class with a short meditation, which you can sit or lay down for. I will have some yoga mats on hand if you're not keen on direct-grass contact, but feel free to bring your own mat or cushion. Preferred payment is cash, but I'll be able to take card too if needed.

Your junk, someone’s treasure
The 2025 Whole Town Garage Sale is set for Labor Day, Saturday March 8 from 8am – 1pm.
If you haven’t been to one before, locals who wish to run a sale at their house simply fill out the form at https://forms.gle/yodN7xvL9t73UVjA8 The $22- participation fee covers inclusion on the map. Each stall holder will be supplied a stallholder kit with balloons & a few maps. Fees are used to cover the costs of marketing of the event.
On the day, visitors & punters purchase a map of sale location for $5- & follow it around sale to sale. Weather permitting, there will also be a sausage sizzle.
All proceeds raised by stall fees & map sales are donated to St. Martin’s Chapel for further upgrades & maintenance.
Come & join in the fun, make a bit cash, hang out with your mates before the winter sets in & clear out your unwanted treasures, tools, home-wares & clothes. It is a fun family day & buyers come from far & wide to grab a bargain.

When did Blackwood Become Blackwood?
When did Blackwood Become Blackwood? Originally Blackwood was referred to as the Mt Blackwood Diggings, Mt Blackwood is a large mountain 736 meter high you can see on the right as you head to Blackwood from Myrniong.
The mountain seems to have been or originally named Mount Solomon by John Batman, in 1835. It was subsequently called Clarke's Big Hill, Neither of these names held permanently.
It is not know exactly when the name changed to Mt Blackwood but it was named after Captain Blackwood (Francis Price Blackwood) of the Fly from 1843 to 1845 (The Fly in Sydney c1842)
At some point between 1835 and 1853 Mt Blackwood’s name was locked in however the township of Blackwood in the very early days was effectively suburbs of Blackwood. There was Golden Point, Simmons Reef, and Red Hill. The "Main" street area of Blackwood (Martin Street) was known as Red Hill. The word suburbs is used where Blackwood would have defined the "district".
It is not clear when the name Blackwood took over as the wholistic name of the area, however in this map in 1866 the area is referred to as the "Township of Blackwood", though it is clear on this map that Red Hill, Golden Point and Simmons Reef as defined.
From Post Office Records can be found - The Post Office (in Blackwood) opened on 22 September 1855 and was known as Mount Blackwood until 1921. SO there we have it, 1921 is what we can call the effective date Blackwood was officially known as Blackwood

First thing to do in Blackwood
Ever wondered what to do as soon as you arrive in Blackwood? Make sure you check out Jindarup, which is our towns name for the Post Office. It's more then a Post Office though, there are Cakes, Coffee, Small meals, icecreams and a variety of retail items. Not to mention the deck. Blackwood Hotel updates!
We it's official now, the pub has sold. It's been called out in The Blackwood Times ( editors thoughts ) but also now on the Official FaceBook Page The town enjoyed the last Friday night on the 25th of November 2024 before new owners Jerry and Jess shut the doors for renovations.
You can track the progress on Instagram and it looks like they are already getting stuck into it. With over 150 year of history is wonderful to see this establishment pass onto a local family and to see some significant inventment. Lookign forward to more updates.

The Whipstick Loop in Blackwood is now open!
The Whipstick Loop in Blackwood is now open! 🙌
Following damage in the June 2021 storm, this popular walking track in the Wombat State Forest was closed for public safety while we assessed and repaired it. The walk is now open for visitors, with a brand-new bridge installed at the start of the loop (pictured).
Before reopening, we undertook cultural heritage assessments, as there is evidence Woi-wurrung speaking peoples used this historic area in the past.
